My name is Rob, and I have been doing business on the Internet since Google was just a gleam in Larry Page’s eye. When I made my first dollar online, Yahoo was still the most popular search engine, and social media had yet to be invented.
A lot has changed since then, but one thing has remained constant – I still enjoy every single day of my career as an online marketer. I never get the Monday morning blues. On the contrary, I am always excited to start a new week and see what happens in the fast-changing worlds of blogging, e-commerce and affiliate marketing.
Every new wave of technology brings new challenges and new opportunities. Sometimes the next big thing fizzles into nothing (remember MySpace anyone?), and sometimes a new product like the iPhone comes out of the blue to change the way we live. One thing for sure, the online world is always interesting to follow and fascinating to be involved with.
My two decades in the online marketing world have been a roller-coaster ride for sure. I built my first website to the point where it was making over a million dollars a year in profit. I started the business on a laptop in my garage, and grew it into an enterprise with a whole team of programmers, designers and marketers working out of expensive offices.
And then I watched my empire crumble in 2008 when the global financial crisis swept away everything we had worked for. The offices were sold, the employees laid off...and I was back to working out of my garage.
That was tough, for sure, but I still had confidence in the online model. So I went back to the drawing board and started again. Starting with a blank WordPress install, I built a new blogging-based business from scratch. Before long, the business was growing and the profits were rolling once again. I started hiring again – but this time building a totally virtual team.
So two decades on from when I first started, I am still making a full-time living online, and still enjoying it as much as I did on day one. And without a doubt, the freedom offered by running an Internet-based business has changed my life.
The location freedom that blogging offers enabled my family to emigrate from cold, wet, rainy Britain to the glorious sun, sea and sandy beaches of Australia. My children grew up swimming in our pool after school, surfing at weekends and enjoying the ultimate laid-back Aussie lifestyle.
Now that they have grown up, I have taken the opportunity to travel and see more of the world. Blogging gives me the freedom I need to make these choices, to enjoy new adventures, and to make the most of every day on Planet Earth.
I am currently based in Thailand, enjoying every moment of a new and exotic Asian lifestyle.
Next year…who knows? Maybe I will move on to South America, or Africa. When you make your money from blogging, anything – and anywhere – is possible.
You can go where you want, do what you want…be with whoever you want. This really is the ultimate in freedom of location, income and lifestyle.
As my new business grew, people started me asking me questions about how I built this business:
- How do you get traffic to your blogs?
- Where do you find your virtual team members?
- What's the best way to monetize my blog?
There were lots of questions, and I realized that with my long experience of online marketing, I could provide answers. So I started this blog, RobPalmer.com, to help people get started with Internet marketing.
