40 Years of Direct Response, Encoded for AI
I have spent over 40 years writing direct response copy — sales pages, VSLs, emails, ads — across every major market from health supplements to SaaS to financial publishing. Over $523 million in tracked campaign results. Thousands of controls written and reviewed. Clients from Apple to ClickBank.
Along the way, I built a library. Swipe files from every winning control I could find. Frameworks from the best copywriters who ever lived — Schwartz, Halbert, Hopkins, Ogilvy, Caples, Sugarman, Collier, Makepeace, Georgi, Sultanic, Kell. Evaluation criteria refined across decades of copy reviews. Compliance knowledge learned through hundreds of rejected ads and banned accounts.
I have now encoded all of it into five free Claude Code skills. Each one takes a specific part of the copywriting workflow and gives Claude the same frameworks, techniques, and principles I use on client work. Not prompts — structured skill files that transform generic AI into a specialized direct response tool.
Every skill is free. No signup. No email gate. No paywall.
Why Skill Files Change Everything
You have probably asked AI to write copy. The result reads smoothly, sounds professional, and converts poorly. That is not a limitation of the AI. It is a limitation of the instructions.
Without a skill file, Claude defaults to generic "marketing-speak" — the same bland, applies-to-everything language that trained prospects have learned to ignore. It does not know Schwartz's awareness levels. It does not apply the So What? Chain to drill past surface benefits. It does not vary rhythm the way real copywriters do. It does not know which words get your ad account banned on Meta.
A skill file fixes that by giving Claude the same playbook a working copywriter uses. Not a vague instruction like "write compelling copy" — a complete framework containing specific formulas, patterns, evaluation criteria, and principles that have been proven across real campaigns. The difference in output quality is not subtle.
The Five Skills
1. Direct Response Copy — The Writing Foundation
This skill writes sales pages, VSLs, emails, headlines, CTAs, and any persuasive copy. It contains the complete frameworks from Schwartz, Hopkins, Ogilvy, Halbert, Caples, Sugarman, and Collier — not name-dropped, but applied. Five proven headline formulas. Six opening techniques. The So What? Chain for drilling past "saves time" to the emotional payoff that actually closes.
What makes it different from generic AI: every feature gets pushed through the So What? Chain three levels deep. A "fast database" becomes "you stop waking up stressed about churn." That is the level of specificity this skill enforces.
2. Ad Copy — Meta Ads That Stop the Scroll
This skill writes high-converting Meta (Facebook + Instagram) ad copy — primary text, headlines, descriptions, and UGC/video ad scripts. It includes eight proven hook types, the WHY/WHAT/HOW structure from Alen Sultanic, three video script formats (short UGC, ADHD super hook, story-style), and the critical strategic decision most AI skips entirely: whether to sell the click or sell the solution.
What makes it different: it understands that Meta ads live or die in the first 125 characters before the "See more" break. Every ad it writes treats those characters as a headline — not a preamble.
3. Landing Page Copy — Bridge Pages That Drive Clicks
This skill writes short-form bridge pages and pre-sell pages — the 300-800 word pages that sit between ads and VSLs. It uses the Three-Paragraph Framework (Discovery/Authority, Social Proof/Results, CTA/Urgency) that winning landing pages follow, plus the mechanism tease, the "Nothing To Do With" elimination pattern, and visceral language that makes the problem felt rather than merely understood.
What makes it different: it knows a bridge page is NOT a sales page. It does not mention products, prices, or offers. It builds curiosity, establishes authority, and makes the CTA the only logical next step — which is exactly what a bridge page needs to do.
4. Copychief — Expert Copy Review in Seconds
This skill turns Claude Code into a structured copy reviewer — the kind of senior creative director at a top direct response agency. It evaluates strategic architecture first (big idea, mechanism, offer stack, emotional throughline) before touching individual lines, then provides section-by-section feedback with specific rewrites and the direct response principle behind each suggestion.
What makes it different: every issue gets four elements — Location, Issue, Fix, Principle. Not "make the headline stronger" but the exact line, what is wrong, a drop-in rewrite, and why the change matters. That is the difference between a horoscope and a copy review.
5. Compliance Checker — Stop Getting Banned
This skill checks ads, landing pages, VSLs, and emails against platform compliance rules for Meta, Google, TikTok, YouTube, and ClickBank. It runs a 9-point checklist audit, then goes line-by-line flagging issues by severity (HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW) with compliant rewrites that preserve persuasive power. Includes a trigger words reference file with compliant substitutions for every common violation.
What makes it different: it knows the difference between what gets flagged on Meta versus YouTube. It knows "regulate blood sugar" is a definitive claim but "helps support blood sugar" is compliant. It knows digital products face lighter scrutiny than supplements. This is not generic caution — it is platform-specific compliance knowledge.
How They Work Together
The five skills follow the direct response workflow:
Write — Use the direct response copy skill for sales pages, VSLs, and emails. Use the ad copy skill for Meta ads and UGC scripts. Use the landing page skill for bridge pages between ads and VSLs.
Review — Use the copychief skill to evaluate strategic architecture and get line-level feedback with specific rewrites. Run it on anything you write — or anything a team member writes.
Check compliance — Use the compliance checker skill before submitting ads or publishing landing pages. Catch trigger words, personal attribute violations, and platform policy issues before they cost you an ad account.
Ship — With copy that is strategically sound, line-level tight, and compliance-checked, you ship with confidence.
How to Install
All five skills install the same way:
- Create a
.claude/skills/directory in your project (or wherever you work with Claude Code) - Save each skill as a markdown file:
direct-response-copy.md,ad-copy.md,landing-page-copy.md,copychief.md,compliance-checker.md - For the ad copy skill, also save
references/meta-ad-specs.md. For the compliance checker, also savereferences/trigger-words.md - Claude Code detects the skills automatically — just ask it to write, review, or check compliance

Who This Is For
- You write your own copy — sales pages, emails, ads — and you want AI that applies proven frameworks instead of producing generic marketing-speak. These skills give you the same playbook a professional direct response copywriter uses.
- You are a copywriter looking at how to encode your own expertise into AI skill files. These five skills are templates for the format — study how they structure frameworks, evaluation criteria, and output formats, then build your own.
- You run a marketing team and need consistent quality across multiple writers and campaigns. The skills apply the same frameworks and standards every time, regardless of who is writing.
- You are curious about making AI useful for real direct response work — not just content generation, but persuasion architecture that drives measurable results.
