- What is Creative Strategist?
- A creative strategist decides what a brand's ads should say and test — the angles, hooks, formats and landing experiences — and runs the loop that turns ad-account data into the next round of creative. Rob Palmer is a creative strategist and direct-response copywriter with 40+ years of experience and $523M in tracked results who produces the creative he plans: scripts, statics, video and landers.
Why Creative Is Now the Lever
Meta has changed what it takes to scale. Since the Andromeda update, the ad system matches ads to people by reading the creative itself, so an account that feeds it more different concepts reaches more buyers. The algorithm now does the targeting, but it can't supply the ideas.
A winning ad that used to run profitably for a quarter can now fatigue in two or three weeks, sometimes in days. When it does, CPA climbs, your scaling budget gets pulled back, and no bid change will fix it. The constraint has moved upstream, to how many good angles you can get into the account and how quickly.
Most brands try one of two fixes. They hire a creative strategist who writes briefs and hands them off, so the editor cutting the ad never saw the customer research the angle came from. Or they hire a copywriter who delivers one polished asset a month when the account needs a dozen tests. The brands that scale have one person who finds the angle and builds the ad at the pace the account demands. That's the job I do.
What I Do, Stage by Stage
You can bring me in at any stage. Some clients arrive with a winning ad and need more like it. Others have a product, a budget and no clear angle yet. Either way the work runs through the same four stages, and I do each one myself, from the first line of research to the page that takes the order.
- Research and angles. I mine reviews, forums, support logs and your competitors' ads for the words your customers actually use, then rank the angles by awareness level so we know which to test first.
- Briefs, scripts, statics and video. Every concept gets a one-page brief, and then I write it: UGC and talking-head scripts, static concepts with their copy, and AI-produced video ads.
- Landers and advertorials. I write the page each ad sends its traffic to, so the promise in the hook is the first thing a visitor sees after the click.
- Testing and iteration. We read the account together, keep what's working and turn off what isn't, and the results write the brief for the next round.
The Direct-Response Difference in Creative Strategy
Creative strategy is a newer name for something direct response has done for a century: writing ads that have to pay for themselves, with the numbers in plain view. I've been doing it since the early 1980s, and it changes the work in four practical ways.
I build angles from the prospect's awareness level, using Eugene Schwartz's model, so a cold audience that hasn't named its problem sees a different ad from one already comparing brands. I take hooks from story, secret, problem and proclamation leads, which have decades of tested results behind them. I write the ad and the lander as one argument. And I build compliance into the copy from the first line, which matters most in health and supplements, where one careless claim can cost you the ad account. A library of 190+ frameworks, run through Claude Code skills I built, is how I keep pace with a busy account.
If you're still weighing the role, I've written a guide to what a creative strategist does. If you mainly need the long-form copy behind your ads, that's my direct response copywriting service.
How an Engagement Runs
It starts with a strategy call. Bring your ad account and your current winners, and I'll show you the angle I'd test next. If I don't see one I'm confident in, I'll say so on the call.
After the call I audit the account properly: what's running, what's fatiguing, which angles you've already spent through and which you haven't touched. That audit becomes the first testing plan.
Then we choose the shape that fits. Most brands scaling on Meta choose a retainer, with a weekly drop of new creative and a monthly testing review where we read the results together and set the next round. Others start with a project: an angle map and a first batch of concepts, or a single campaign built from ad to lander. Either way, you'll have a fixed-price quote within 48 hours of the call.
I take a small number of engagements each quarter, because I produce the work myself and I won't hand it to a junior to keep up.
Creative That Has Already Paid for Itself
Ben Palmer, a ClickBank Platinum vendor, gets 300% ROAS on the email-driven health funnel I wrote for him, with every email built on the same angle. For Abundant, a long-form, story-driven sales page took Facebook cold traffic to 340% ROAS. The VSL funnel I wrote for Conor Reynolds converts at 8% on cold traffic, with the video and the sales page drawn from the same angle map.
The testing discipline behind all of it goes back to Belron, where I ran a direct-response campaign for nine years and kept putting new creative up against the control. It tracked $523 million in sales. More recently Stefan Georgi hired me as Copy Chief at Copy Accelerator, reviewing and fixing other professional copywriters' work, and I've written for funnels including the $40M Gluco 6 supplement and Mobile Profits, which reached #1 on ClickBank.
Every one of those numbers came from paid traffic, where the creative either paid for itself or got turned off.

The latest ads are working great. Of the 20 texts you provided we only needed 6 — and 3 in particular achieved truly amazing results. They're performing so well we haven't even tested the rest yet. The leads are perfect: happy to answer the phone and very cooperative — a significantly better target audience than before. Frequently Asked Questions
A creative strategist decides what a brand's ads should say and test, then runs the loop that turns ad-account results into the next round of creative. In practice that means researching customers, finding angles, choosing hooks and formats, briefing or producing the ads, and reading the data to see which ideas are working. On Meta, where the algorithm rewards a steady supply of genuinely different concepts, it has become the role that decides whether an account can scale. If you're hiring for it, I've written about <a href="/blog/hire-a-creative-strategist">how to hire a creative strategist</a>.
A copywriter is usually hired to deliver an asset: a sales page, an email sequence, a script. A creative strategist owns the whole testing program, meaning which angles to try, in what order and in which formats, and what the results mean for the next batch. The best creative strategists think like direct-response copywriters, because both jobs come down to finding the message that makes a stranger act. I've done both for 40 years, which is why I can plan a round of tests and then write every piece of it.
At an agency, the strategist who wins the pitch is rarely the person writing your scripts, and every handoff between strategist, writer and editor loses a little of the idea. With me, the person who audits your account is the same person who writes your briefs, scripts, statics and landers. You get senior judgment on every concept, and changes move quickly because there's no chain to go through. If you need more volume than one strategist can produce, I'll work alongside your editors or your agency.
Yes, and it's the main reason clients hire me. I write the UGC and talking-head scripts, the static concepts and their copy, the advertorials and the landing pages. For video, I produce AI-made ads through my own studio stack, with voice, edit and captions, so a concept can be tested before you pay for a human shoot. If you already have editors or creators you like, I'll brief them and write their scripts instead. Most clients end up using a mix of the two.
Meta, meaning Facebook and Instagram, is where most of my DTC clients spend and where most of my creative runs. I also write for YouTube ads and native placements such as Taboola and Outbrain, along with the advertorials, landers and emails that follow the click. The same method works on every platform, because the job is the same everywhere: find the angle that stops the right person, then keep that promise all the way to the order. Formats and compliance rules differ, so I build each concept for the platform it will run on.
It depends on your spend and how fast your ads fatigue, so I set the number with you after the audit instead of quoting a standard package. As a rough guide, an account spending enough to read results every week needs new concepts every week. I'd also rather ship five genuinely different angles than twenty versions of one idea, because different angles are what teach the account something new.
We agree the numbers before anything ships. Usually that's cost per acquisition and ROAS, with hook rate, hold rate and click-through rate as the early signals that show whether the opening, the middle or the offer is losing people. When we review results together, we look at which angles found buyers, which fatigued and why, and that decides the next round. I track the lander too, because an ad can win the click and lose the sale on the page. Success means more winning concepts in rotation than when we started, and an account that can take more spend.
I work on a retainer or a project, whichever fits. A retainer covers ongoing work, with new creative every week and a results review each month. A project covers a defined piece of work, such as the research and an opening round of concepts, or one complete campaign. The number depends on how many concepts you need each month, which formats they're in, and whether I'm producing the finished creative or briefing your team to produce it. You'll have a fixed-price quote within 48 hours of the strategy call, with no hourly billing.
Book a strategy call. Beforehand, send me access to your ad account, or screenshots of your current winners and their numbers if you'd rather not share access yet. On the call we'll go through what's working in the account and whether I'm the right fit for it. If I'm not, I'll tell you. If we go ahead, the first piece of work is the audit and angle map, which sets the testing plan for everything that follows.
Yes, and it's often the best setup. Plenty of brands already have a media buyer, editors or a roster of UGC creators, and what they're short of is a steady supply of strong angles and scripts. In that case I write the briefs and scripts, your team shoots and edits, and we review the results together. I work inside the tools you already use: Slack, Notion, Google Drive and whatever your editors run, so nobody has to learn a new process to work with me.
